Pastor Prosecuted for Preaching

A retired pastor prosecuted for preaching outside a hospital in Northern Ireland is awaiting a verdict after a judge reserved judgment in his case until later this year. Pastor Clive Johnston appeared before Coleraine Magistrates’ Court following a hearing that had been postponed from December. After listening to arguments, the judge said he would take time to consider the case before issuing a ruling.

Johnston was charged in connection with an open-air sermon he delivered in 2024 near Causeway Hospital in Coleraine. The sermon, based on John 3:16, was preached within a legally designated “safe access zone” established to protect access to abortion services. Prosecutors allege Johnston attempted to “influence” people accessing those services. However, the service took place on a Sunday, when the hospital’s abortion clinic was closed. Johnston did not mention abortion during the sermon and displayed no banners, placards, or signs related to the issue. Video footage referenced during proceedings showed police officers telling Johnston that he should share his Christian message in a “safe” location, such as the hospital chaplaincy, rather than within the buffer zone.

The case has been supported by The Christian Institute, which described the prosecution as a “shocking” infringement on freedoms of speech and religion. Following the hearing, Johnston said he welcomed the judge’s decision to reflect on the issues involved. “I’m glad the judge has decided to go away and think carefully about this case because there is a lot at stake,” Johnston said. “We held a small, open-air Sunday service near a hospital and made no reference whatsoever to abortion. Yet prosecutors argue the buffer-zone law is so wide that even that was a criminal offense.”

Johnston acknowledged the personal toll of the legal process but said he has been encouraged by prayer and faith. “It’s a difficult thing to go through, but we have drawn near to Christ for strength. Christ is the most precious thing in the world to us, and that is why we are eager to speak about Him in the highways and byways of the land we love,” he said.

The case has drawn international attention, including from the United States. The U.S. State Department described the prosecution as “concerning” and said it was monitoring developments. A State Department spokesperson told The Daily Telegraph that the U.S. is observing multiple buffer zone cases in the United Kingdom, along with what it described as broader concerns about censorship across Europe. Referring to a separate case involving pro-life activist Isabel Vaughan-Spruce, the spokesperson added that the U.K.’s treatment of silent prayer raises significant questions about freedom of speech and religious liberty, calling it a troubling departure from values traditionally shared by the U.S. and U.K.

Biblical Connection: This is just yet another example of the worrisome road that Europe finds itself on. Europe used to be the bastion of Christendom. More missionaries were sent from Europe across the world than anywhere else for centuries. However, Europe has opened itself up to significant changes over the past few decades. Secularization has dominated much of the native populations of Europe. Islamic influence through mass migration from the Middle East has also created an entirely new dynamic. The Christian foundation that was once so strong in Europe has slowly crumbled to the point that simply preaching a sermon within a radius of a hospital could be deemed illegal. May this serve as a warning to the world that unless Christianity stays faithful and evangelism continues, even the strongest Christian places on earth can fall away from their Christian foundation.

PRAY: Pray for Christians in Europe to stay faithful and for revival to break out and help return the continent to its Christian foundation.
