Will Iran Regime Fall by Military Force or Economic Pressure?
Since the beginning of the US-Israeli operation against Iran, many have wondered what the endgame will be? Will the Iran regime finally fall? How will it fall? Will economic pressure and the blockage be enough or will it take more military action, even possibly boots on the ground? President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu have been weary of sending in long term military assets up to this point, preferring air and missile attacks, special forces on the group in quick strikes and economic pressure.
Recently retired Mossad Director David Barnea said recently that Iran's ruling regime will eventually collapse under a combination of economic pressure, covert operations, and internal public unrest. Speaking at a Jerusalem Municipality ceremony where he received an award on behalf of the Mossad, Barnea delivered his first public remarks since stepping down on June 1. During his speech, he expressed support for the Trump administration's renewed sanctions campaign against Iran, while arguing that economic measures alone would not be enough to achieve lasting change. "The decision to place the most severe sanctions on Iran was a correct and praiseworthy decision," Barnea said. "But the sanctions are just another stage. There will be no choice, in my view, other than to escalate the economic actions, the policies, and the operations against the regime until it falls, and it will fall."
Barnea did not specify what additional measures he believes are necessary, leaving unclear whether he was referring to military action, covert sabotage, or other forms of pressure. The former intelligence chief argued that the international community has become increasingly aware of the threat posed by Iran. According to Barnea, concerns extend beyond Tehran's nuclear ambitions to include its ballistic missile program and support for regional proxy groups. He credited recent developments, including what he referred to as "Operation Roaring Lion," with changing global perceptions of Iran's role in regional security. "Until Operation Roaring Lion, we felt that Iran was a problem for the State of Israel," he said. "Today, the whole world knows clearly that the Iranian saga is not solely our problem."
Barnea also addressed the condition of Iran-backed groups Hezbollah and Hamas, claiming both organizations have been significantly weakened since the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel. Regarding Hezbollah, he suggested that long-running intelligence operations had damaged the group's morale and effectiveness, while also acknowledging the impact of Israel Defense Forces operations in Lebanon over the past several years. On Hamas, Barnea said the organization no longer resembles the structured military force it once was. He noted that before the 2023 conflict, Hamas maintained 24 organized battalions but has since suffered substantial losses. His comments offered a rare public assessment of regional threats from one of Israel's most prominent former intelligence leaders as tensions involving Iran continue to shape Middle East security discussions.
Biblical Connections: While it is clear the Iran regime is evil and deserves to be destroyed and replaced, it is unlikely that a new regime will be significantly more friendly to the West and especially Israel. If the Gog-Magog War of Ezkiel 38-39 is in the eschatological future as it appears, then Iran, listed as one of the enemies of Israel in that passage, will clearly continue to be an enemy of Israel for the long haul. While it is good that an evil regime looks to be on the verge of collapse one way or the other, we should be cautious of just how much the situation in the Middle East will clearly change.
PRAY: Pray that the Iranian regime will be stopped and replaced and that a better regime will take its place. While peace will not last forever, a regime not so bent on nuclear would be a major positive.
